devil blues

lyrics and music by Nathan Davis

I put a little money down on another soul
But the devil gave me money back, said I was in the hole
He said "I heard you play the blues, boy, and I heard you play 'em true
But you've got something to learn, child, 'fore I can do something for you"

You gotta cry, cry, cry, everytime you sing a line
You gotta die inside because there ain't no place to hide
And when the devil's got your soul
There ain't a damn thing rock and roll is gonna do for you
When you're living with the blues

Now, the devil was a smart man, but he wasn't very kind
He said "That woman you been missin', boy
She just been messin' with your mind
You gotta think about the fire burning in your hands
And that's a feeling she won't ever know,
No, she won't ever understand

If you die tomorrow with no soul to save
Just pray your redeemer comes to pull you from your grave..."

You gotta cry, cry, cry, everytime you sing a line
You gotta die inside because there ain't no place to hide
And when the devil's got your soul
There ain't a damn thing rock and roll is gonna do for you
When you're living with the blues

Now, I thought about his words
And I looked him in his eye
Put my money in my pocket, baby
And said "That was a mighty nice try
But I don't need no devil to pay my dues for me
You can't live until you learn, child,
Ain't nothin' comes for free."

I remember the first time I heard Nathan play. It was a couple of years ago at Slim's, during Big Rick's open mike. Nathan was the last performer to play that night. He shared the stage with Derek Arnold on bass, that Custer dude on guitar ,and Marshall on drums. How anyone could sound good with that raggedy bunch of musicians, I'll never understand ;), but Nathan pulled it off.

Seriously, from the moment Nathan started to perform, you could tell he was the real deal. The man had music in his soul and he gave the audience a small taste of it. After his three songs, you could tell from the crowd's reaction that everyone knew they'd heard something special that night. Thank goodness I'd already played, cause there's no way I'd have wanted to follow that awesome performance. I don't think anyone would.
