better late than never
lyrics and music by Nathan Davis and John Custer (unfinished)
What's that light behind your eyes?
Who's been runnin' through your dreams?
You look so damn good in love.
That's the way it's supposed to be;
That's the way you used to look
When you were in love with me.
I know the things I do break your heart;
But my life wants to end before it starts.
My life was never mine, the devil had it this whole time,
And he won't leave me be till I tear it apart.
I didn't expect to see you here.
Let me show how it is now;
Try to make it clear.
Close your eyes, try to smile,
Think about me for awhile.
Turn around, go back home,
I'll be okay here on my own.
I've been standing on my knees,
Seems like it has been forever, yeah;
And I've been living on memories,
Some say better late than never.
Remember dancing to the silence?
Do you still have some faith in me?
Cause even though you have to go,
Even if your heart is cold,
It's a million miles from somewhere
And I've got one million miles to go.
I've been standing on my knees,
It seems like it's been forever;
And I've been living on memories,
Some say better late than never.
Better Late Than Never represents one of the only collaborative song-writing examples we have that Nathan ever did. Working with his producer, John Custer, this song was never finished, and it was decided that it was best left that way.
One of the most interesting things about the lyrics is that Nate uses almost identical words in this song that he did in one of his earliest songs, My Alibi. "Remember dancing to the silence? Do you still have some faith in me?" His song-writing was brought full circle..
