my last farewell
lyrics and music by Nathan Davis
This is my last glass of beer
So why don't you just stand up and cheer
Been drunk for so long, Lord, now it's goin' on a year
So this is my last glass of beer
This is my last glass of wine
Jump up and holler and shout one more time
That woman's been drivin' me out of my mind
So this is my last glass of wine
This is my last cigarette
There's only one thing in this life that I'll ever regret
That's the day that me and her met
So this is my last cigarette
This is my last alcohol
She ain't here to catch me when I fall
I'm too drunk to walk so I'm learnin' to crawl
This is my last alcohol
This is my last cocktail
Tomorrow they're taking me off to jail
And this time I know that I can't go my bail
This is my last cocktail
This is my last farewell
Tell all my friends that I'm headin' for hell
But they shouldn't worry about me 'cause I know the place well
Yes, this is my last farewell.
Tell all my friends that I'm headin' for hell
But they shouldn't worry about me 'cause I know the place well
Yes, this is my last farewell
Lord, this is my last farewell
[Editor's note:] The story goes like this:
Nathan was in an Alaskan bar and a guy gave him a piece of paper from his wallet, obviously old. It contained some lyrics which the guy said were written by a buddy in Vietnam who died a few days later in battle.
Nathan took the lyrics, rewrote them a little bit, added some more, and the song "My Last Farewell" was the result.
He took the finished work back to the guy and asked for his name and the name of the soldier so he could properly credit them, and the man refused and said it was now Nathan's song.
I'm telling you the story as Nathan told it to me.
