NATHAN DAVIS

still rock and roll

lyrics and music by Nathan Davis

I've been kicked down on my knees,
And I've been wounded by my faith;
Found Jesus in a needle and the angels on a mission of mercy;
I'm still alive and you thought I'd be dead at 25.
Flat on my back to the wall,
A thousand eyes look around this room;
But I made my own prison here,
They just watch over my tomb.

But have you ever wanted to scream for the sake of screamin'?
Have you ever wanted to love for the sake of dreaming there is love?
Tonight my guitar's been drinkin',
And I think the piano's stoned,
But it's still rock and roll to me,
Still rock and roll.

It's gettin harder now to remember who I am.
Every night I read her letters, and they make me feel a little bit better;
She's been good to me because she knows how to leave me be.
Wonder what she's doing now, and I wonder if she cries,
And does she go to sleep at night and hold our baby tight;
Singing, "Daddy's on the road somewhere and workin' in the lights,
He's still alive and we thought he'd be dead at 25."

Well, I stopped looking for my savior when I sold my soul,
And now the sun is setting on me,
But I feel too alive to be this damn old,
Still rock and roll.

But have you ever wanted to scream for the sake of screamin'?
Have you ever wanted to love for the sake of believing in love?
But tonight my guitar's been drinkin',
And I think the piano's stoned,
God, I'm so tired of thinking,
But I love this road I'm on.
If I ever find out what I'm missing, baby, your daddy's coming home,
But it's still rock and roll to me,
Still rock and roll.

This song was inspired by a musician friend who wrote an article about life touring on the road. Nate was impressed by the guy's obvious love of performing for its own sake, and dislike of performing as a means to gain money or fame or anything else other than the personal satisfaction that comes from doing great art and sharing it with people who appreciate what you've done.
